The Yamatji People’s strong connection to water is recognised in the ILUA (Clause 17), with specific recognition of the spiritual relationship of the Yamatji Nation with water.

The ILUA included funding for:

  • Water monitoring training program through Central Regional TAFE and the Department of Water and Environment Regulation (DWER).  To date, two trainees have been through the program and are now employed by the Water Company.

  • Water sites restoration project to identify, restore and protect cultural sites.  The Yamatji Water Company is currently working with the Cultural Authority to identify 4 important sites.

  • Development of a strategic Yamatji water reserve consisting of 25 gigalitres per year to use by our own businesses or trade of the water to create opportunity and/or economic return for the Yamatji Nation.

YSRC is currently developing a Yamatji Water Strategy that will clearly outline the 25 gigalitres its location and quality.
